Chimelong North Gate Driving Safari & Grand Circus Finale
Morning: 北门自驾区 · 动物就在车窗旁 / North Gate Driving Safari: Animals Right Outside Your Window
Crossing the African Savanna
The final day of our Guangzhou adventure — we returned to Chimelong, this time entering through the North Gate for the driving safari. Boarding the park’s open-air tram, we set off on a journey “around the world.”
The tram rolled into the African savanna zone, and the sight took our breath away — a herd of zebras grazed right next to the vehicle, so close we could almost touch their black-and-white stripes! A little further, giraffes strolled with effortless elegance, elands bowed their heads to graze, and the entire panorama looked like a scene straight from an African wildlife documentary.
Animals right outside the window, their staggering size within arm’s reach. A family of three elephants rolled in a mud wallow, a rhinoceros plodded past like a small tank, and lions lounged lazily on a distant hilltop soaking up the sun. Zhaozhao pressed her face against the window the entire ride, unable to take it all in fast enough.
Did you know? Zebra stripes aren’t just for looks. Scientists discovered that the black-and-white pattern confuses flies and horseflies, disrupting their ability to land properly. So zebra stripes are actually natural “insect repellent”! Also, every zebra’s stripe pattern is unique — like human fingerprints.
Afternoon: 步行区 · 奇趣动物大合集 / Walking Area: A Parade of Wonderful Creatures
Raptors and Adorable Beasts
After the tram ride, we entered the walking area for even closer animal encounters.
An eagle owl perched on a branch, its enormous amber eyes fixed on us without blinking. Its gaze was sharp and mysterious, like a wise old scholar appraising visiting guests.
In the capybara enclosure, a few plump capybaras strolled leisurely through tropical foliage. Capybaras always wear the same “nothing bothers me” expression, as if the entire world’s affairs are none of their concern. Zhaozhao said capybaras look like super-sized guinea pigs; Mom said they looked more like mobile fuzzy cushions.
Did you know? Capybaras are the world’s largest rodents (the biggest “mouse relatives”!), weighing up to 60 kg. They’re social superstars who get along peacefully with almost every animal — birds perch on their backs, monkeys lean against them for naps. Their ultra-chill personality has made them an internet sensation, hailed as “the social ceiling of the animal kingdom.”
A Colorful World of Birds
The bird area was today’s most colorful stop.
A ring-tailed lemur studied us curiously with its large golden eyes — wait, lemurs aren’t birds! But it was in the exhibit next to the aviary, gripping branches with its signature black-and-white ringed tail, leaping nimbly from perch to perch.
The true avian stars were a pair of toucans. Their disproportionately large bills were painted in orange, yellow, green, and red, as vivid as if a child had colored them with crayons. The two toucans perched side by side, looking like a pair of vibrantly painted art pieces.
Zhaozhao also got to try the “parrot encounter” — a blue parakeet landed on her hand and tilted its head curiously at her. She was so thrilled she froze, afraid any movement would scare it away. This was probably her favorite moment of the entire day!
Did you know? Despite looking heavy, a toucan’s bill is actually super lightweight! It’s hollow inside, supported by a sponge-like bone structure that’s both strong and light. Scientists study toucan bill structure to design lighter, stronger engineering materials — this is called “biomimicry,” learning from animals to invent new things!
Koalas and Anteaters
In the koala house, a koala was curled up asleep in the crook of a eucalyptus branch, its fluffy body rolled into a ball, its big black nose twitching gently with each breath. Even amid the noisy crowds, it slept soundly — koalas sleep 18-22 hours a day, the undisputed “sleep champion” of the animal kingdom.
On the lawn outside, a giant anteater dragged its bushy tail slowly along. By the pond behind it, scarlet ibises spread their pink wings — that delicate rosy hue was breathtaking in the sunlight.
Did you know? Koalas are not “koala bears”! They’re marsupials (related to kangaroos), not bears. A baby koala is born the size of a peanut and crawls into its mother’s pouch to develop for six more months. Koalas eat almost nothing but eucalyptus leaves, which contain toxins — they have specialized livers to detoxify them, a superpower no other animal can match!
Asia’s Most Spectacular Circus
As darkness fell, we entered the grand circular theater of Chimelong International Circus. Billed as “Asia’s most spectacular circus performance,” it brings together world-class acts from across the globe. The moment the lights dimmed, the entire audience held its breath —
Aerialists
The opening act left us stunned: aerialists flipped, soared, and caught each other over a dozen meters in the air, with no safety net! Every throw and catch was pinpoint precise, and the audience’s hearts flew with them. Zhaozhao gripped Mom’s hand tight, mouth wide open, forgetting to breathe.
Motorcycle Globe of Death
The most hair-raising act was the “Motorcycle Globe of Death” — inside a giant metal sphere, one motorcycle began racing along the inner wall, then two, then three… until an astonishing eight motorcycles crisscrossed simultaneously inside the globe! The roar of engines was deafening, sparks flew, and gasps erupted across the audience. What incredible precision and courage!
Animal Stars
No circus is complete without animal stars. Trained elephants danced in rhythm, nimble monkeys performed acrobatic flips, and horses galloped across the arena carrying acrobat riders… every animal and trainer moved in seamless harmony.
The White Tiger Finale
The grand finale was the most breathtaking moment of all: from the center of the stage, a transparent glass platform rose, and upon it stood a white tiger — its pure white coat blazing under the spotlights, amber eyes surveying the entire arena with regal authority. The full cast assembled on stage, pyrotechnics erupted from every direction, lights shifted in kaleidoscopic patterns, and the music swelled to its climax —
The entire theater erupted. Applause, cheers, and the thunder of pyrotechnics merged together as everyone rose to their feet. Zhaozhao, perched on Dad’s shoulders, clapped with all her might, her face ablaze with excitement and joy.
This was not just the circus finale — it was the grand finale of our entire seven-day Guangzhou journey.
Did you know? Chimelong International Circus boasts one of the world’s largest circus venues, seating nearly 10,000 spectators. The show features over 300 performers from more than 20 countries and hundreds of animals. The roughly 90-minute performance blends acrobatics, magic, clowning, animal acts, and cutting-edge audiovisual effects into a truly world-class spectacle.
