Chimelong Safari Park, Happy World & Nian Beast Parade

Zhaozhao riding polar bear statue at Chimelong entrance

Morning: 长隆!出发!/ Chimelong, Here We Come!

We set off early with hearts racing — today was Chimelong day! Chimelong Safari Park is one of the world’s largest wildlife theme parks, home to over 500 species and more than 20,000 rare animals from across the globe. The park was packed with Spring Festival crowds, but nothing could dampen our excitement.

At the South Gate entrance, Zhaozhao spotted a giant polar bear statue and immediately climbed on for a ride, striking her best explorer pose. All right then — today’s animal adventure officially begins!

Did you know? Chimelong Safari Park sits in Guangzhou’s Panyu District, covering about 800 mu (roughly 75 football fields!). It’s divided into the South Gate walking area and the North Gate driving safari. Today we conquer the walking area; tomorrow we drive through!

Morning: 南门步行区 · 与动物面对面 / South Gate Walking Area: Face to Face with Animals

Feeding Cormorants

Our first stop: a colony of cormorants by the water. These large black birds perched on wooden posts along the shore, stretching their long necks, waiting for visitors to toss them small fish. Zhaozhao carefully held out a little fish — and whoosh — a cormorant’s neck shot forward and snatched it away so fast she jumped back in surprise!

Did you know? Cormorants have been “employed” in China for over a thousand years! Fishermen train them to dive and catch fish, tying a cord around their necks to prevent them from swallowing the big ones. After catching a fish, the cormorant spits it out for the fisherman. This ancient technique, called “cormorant fishing,” can still be seen on the Li River in Guilin!

Feeding Giraffes Up Close

The moment Zhaozhao had been waiting for — feeding giraffes! A giraffe bent its impossibly long neck down, extended its blue-purple tongue, and gently wrapped it around a branch from Zhaozhao’s hand. A giraffe’s tongue is about 45 centimeters long, incredibly flexible, and colored deep bluish-purple. When the tongue licked Zhaozhao’s palm, she dissolved into giggles — ticklish and hilarious!

Did you know? Why is a giraffe’s tongue so dark? Because giraffes spend 12-16 hours a day wrapping their tongues around leaves, the dark pigment acts as built-in sunscreen against Africa’s intense sun! Also, despite their enormous necks, giraffes have the same number of neck vertebrae as humans — just seven — but each one is super-elongated.

The King of Beasts

In the big cats section, a tiger gave a massive yawn — jaws stretched wide, razor-sharp canines on full display, a sight both majestic and comical. Nearby in a pool, a white tiger was swimming! Just a furry head bobbed above the water, four huge paws paddling below. Who says cats don’t like water? This white tiger was clearly enjoying its “spa time.”

Did you know? White tigers aren’t a separate species — they’re a rare color variant of the Bengal tiger caused by a genetic mutation that suppresses orange pigment. There are only about 200 white tigers in the world, most in captivity. Chimelong is home to one of the largest groups of white tigers in China!

Afternoon: 年兽花车巡游 · The Nian Beast Parade

The Nian Beast Arrives!

At 3 PM, festive music rang through the park — the special Spring Festival “Nian Beast Parade” was starting!

The first float carried an enormous mechanical Nian beast, rolling forward majestically. It was beautifully crafted — golden scales glittering, red eyes swiveling left and right, mouth opening and closing with deep “roars.” Zhaozhao was nervous at first, but soon burst out laughing — the Nian beast’s expression was actually quite adorable, more like a grumpy oversized kitten than a terrifying monster.

Next came the Peacock float — a giant peacock with its magnificent tail spread wide, while acrobat dancers in peacock-blue costumes twirled on the float as though the peacock had truly fanned its feathers to life.

Did you know? In legend, the “Nian” is a monster afraid of the color red and loud noises. Every New Year’s Eve, it would emerge to devour people. When villagers discovered its weakness, they began pasting red couplets, setting off firecrackers, and wearing red clothes — all to scare the Nian away. That’s the origin of Spring Festival traditions we still follow today!

Evening: 长隆欢乐世界 · Chimelong Happy World

From Daylight Into the Night

After bidding farewell to the animals, we headed next door to Chimelong Happy World. As dusk fell, the entrance lit up spectacularly, glowing like a dream.

Zhaozhao’s favorite was the little train — riding through tunnels and around curves, she squealed with delight at every turn. The grown-ups, meanwhile, watched the Giant Pendulum in awe — a colossal pendulum swinging brave riders through enormous arcs, the apex nearly touching the sky. Mom declared, “I will never ride that thing in my life,” but Zhaozhao vowed she’d try it when she’s older.

Lion Dance Photo Op

At the park exit, a set of large lion dance decorations glowed lifelike under the lights. Golden lion heads, red embroidered balls, flowing colorful ribbons — pure Spring Festival atmosphere. The three of us posed for a family photo among the lion dance figures, the perfect ending to an incredibly full day.

Did you know? Lion dances come in two styles: Northern and Southern. Guangdong’s is the Southern lion, also called “Awakening Lion” (xingshi). Southern lions have bigger heads, brighter colors, and focus on “plucking the green” — the lion leaps to “eat” lettuce hung from a height (lettuce, “shengcai,” sounds like “generating wealth”). A skilled lion dance team makes every blink, head shake, and leap look real!

From feeding giraffes face to face to the Nian Beast parade, from a white tiger’s spa session to the lights of Happy World — this day overflowed with the gentleness of animals, the joy of festivals, and the laughter of family.
