Day 3 - Thursday, February 20, 2026
A day of revolution and legend: Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, the Five Rams founding myth, and a dazzling lantern festival.
上午 · Morning: 百年历史之路 / A Century of History
Pui Ching Middle School
Did you know? Pui Ching Middle School (培正中学) was founded in 1889 and is one of the most prestigious schools in southern China. Its alumni include scientists, artists, and leaders. The school’s motto emphasizes integrity and diligence — values that have guided students for over 130 years!

Site of the 3rd CPC National Congress
Did you know? In 1923, only two years after the Communist Party of China was founded, delegates gathered right here in Guangzhou for their 3rd National Congress. The key decision? To cooperate with the Kuomintang (Nationalist Party) to unify China. This alliance shaped the course of Chinese history for decades to come.

中午 · Midday: 天下为公 / All Under Heaven
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall
Did you know? The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall was designed by architect Lu Yanzhi (吕彦直) and completed in 1931. Its most amazing engineering feat: the main auditorium seats thousands of people with zero interior pillars! The entire roof is supported by an ingenious hidden steel truss system. The blue glazed-tile roof with its octagonal flying eaves has become one of Guangzhou’s most iconic silhouettes.

下午 · Afternoon: 五羊传说 / The Legend of the Five Rams
Yuexiu Park

Did you know? The kapok tree (木棉) is Guangzhou’s official city flower. Unlike most flowers, kapok blossoms appear before the leaves, so the whole tree looks like it’s on fire! The tree can grow over 25 meters tall, and its cotton-like seed fibers were historically used to stuff pillows and mattresses. In Cantonese culture, the kapok is called the “hero flower” (英雄花) because it blooms bold and bright, then falls whole to the ground — never withering on the branch.
The Five Rams Statue
Did you know? Guangzhou is nicknamed the “City of Rams” (羊城) because of this founding myth: five celestial beings riding five rams, each carrying grain in their mouths, descended from heaven to save the city from famine. The rams turned to stone and Guangzhou prospered ever after. The Five Rams Statue (五羊石像) at the top of Yuexiu Park has been the city’s emblem since it was sculpted in 1960!

晚上 · Evening: 流光溢彩灯会 / A Sea of Lanterns
Yuexiu Lantern Festival

Did you know? Traditional Chinese lanterns are handcrafted using a wire frame (铁丝骨架) covered with layers of colored paper (彩纸贴面). This technique has been used for centuries! Modern festival lanterns can be enormous — some stand several stories tall — but they still use the same basic principle. The warm glow you see comes from light shining through the translucent paper layers.

Day 3 Wrap-up
